March 12, 1989 is the officially recorded birthday of the World-Wide Web.
In 1991, Missouri’s four-year public colleges expressed the desire to connect to the NSFnet, a precursor to today’s Internet. The result was the creation of one of the first statewide higher education networks in the country: the Missouri Research and Education Network (MOREnet).
We operate as a separate business unit within the University of Missouri System, we began with 12 public college and university charter members with the primary purpose to, “develop, maintain and cultivate applications for electronic interchange in support of the educational research and service missions of our members.” Over the next 10 years our growth was rapid. We collaborated with the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, the Secretary of State’s Office and the Department of Higher Education to begin delivering secure, reliable and robust Internet connectivity to all member organizations. Twenty-eight years later, we are proud to continue to advocate for academia and public sector while providing essential products and services.
Internet connectivity was the first service offered by MOREnet Today, we offer so much more than just an internet connection:
- E-rate support, consulting and filing
- Domain name services
- Network and Cyber Security operations support
- Proactive blocking of known malware sites
- Network monitoring
- Consortium discounts
